Explanation of Computing River Reach Sinuosity Exercise

Illustration of Channel Curvature

Exercise Objective

To assess computation of river Sinuosity using earlier measurements from topographic maps and possibly aerial photos.

Exercise Explanation

This exercise requires prior completion of the two previous FGM exercises.
  1. Use Valley and river Reach lengths to compute Sinuosity. The quotient of river length at 5930 m and Valley length at 5500 m is a river Sinuosity of 1.08.
  2. Use Valley and river Reach slopes to compute Sinuosity. The quotient of Valley slopes of 0.0364 and river slope of 0.0337 is a river Sinuosity of 1.08.
