Explanation of Statement for FGM Terms Exercise
Exercise Objective
To assess the technical statement that uses FGM terms Bankfull Width, Wetted Width, flood prone area, and entrenchment ratio.
Exercise Explanation
- Bankfull Width is listed in the page Bankfull characteristics, and the other terms under a their direct heading, in key terms of Section 3. Possible statements include:
- In today's FGM survey to establish the entrenchment ratio, we measured Bankfull Width and the width of the flood prone area. Fortunately for the field crew, the Wetted Width was small, and the river safe to wade and its bottom features readily measured.
- The Wetted Width is typically less than the Bankfull Width, and for entrenchment ratios greater than 1, Bankfull Width is almost always less than the width at the flood prone area. In flooded conditions, however, the Wetted Width may very well exceed Bankfull and occupy the flood prone area.
