Key Terms - Slope Calculations
This image shows other slopes such as water surface and channel bed slopes.
- Valley Slope (Sv)
- The change in Elevation divided by the length of Valley. It is the slope of a Valley for a given Reach where Valley and Reach intersect for some longer distance. Likely includes several Meanders or step pools.
- Channel Slope
- The channel along a representative channel distance often of Elevation divided by the length of channel along a channel distance of 20-30 riffle/pool sequences or 2 Meander lengths.
Formula:
Channel Slope = Valley Slope/Sinuosity
Valley Slope = Channel Slope * Sinuosity
