Exercises to Reinforce Geometric RelationsIn this exercise, there are three options for progressing with analysis of Ouachita River (USGS Gauging Station 07356000) stage-discharge data, channel geometry data, and channel discharge data. The goal for each approach is the same, which is for you to estimate the Bankfull Discharge given stage, channel geometry for that Bankfull Discharge, and the recurrence interval for the Bankfull Discharge. The three options are: 1. View and possibly download the Excel spreadsheet graphs of Ouachita River geometric trends needed to complete the exercise. These are given in later slides. 2. Download a completed Excel spreadsheet containing the Ouachita River data and graphs. If you would like to use the completed Excel sheet, note that you need to have software that can read Microsoft Excel worksheets installed on your computer to use and view this .xls file. 3. Download an incomplete but pre-set Excel spreadsheet and download the Ouachita River raw data for import. These data area a 9-207.txt file and a WATSTORE.txt file If you would like to use the incomplete Excel sheet and raw data, you need to have Excel installed on your computer and know how to use the Excel Menu Data functions of Refresh External Data for the 9-207.txt file in the 9-207 worksheet, and Get External Data > Import Text File for the WATSTORE.txt file in the Watstore worksheet. Further, if you are importing raw data into the spreadsheet, you will need to perform cell computations that sort and rank the WATSTORE discharge data and then populate the WATSTORE return probability and interval columns on the probability worksheet. The image shows the Excel spreadsheet with the pre-set column headings and imported data. | |
