Explanation of River Cross Sectional Area Exercise

cross section

Exercise Objective

To examine earlier estimate of Bankfull cross sectional area based on measurement and computation.

Exercise Explanation

  1. Bankfull Width is 100 feet, which extends from the left to right edge of the cross section profile.
  2. Bankfull Depths, from left to right in feet, are 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7.5, 10, 11, 10, 8.5, 7, 6, 4.5, 3, 2.5, 1, 0. The mean Bankfull Depth is 4.67 feet.
  3. Bankfull cross sectional area is 467 square feet, which is derived using the formula given as Abkf = Wbkf dbkf.
