Riparian Vegetation Influences

river vegetation

In certain channels, adjustments are seen as a result of riparian vegetation removal or changes. Width to depth ratios of Stream types C, D, E and F increase when riparian tree and shrub species are converted to grasses. This sets in motion a series of adjustments to increase sediment Deposition and trend toward a new stability.

Riparian vegetation is categorized as:

  • Forbs
  • Annual grass
  • Perennial grass
  • Rhizomatous grasses (sedges, rushes)
  • Low brush
  • High brush
  • Combination overstory
  • Deciduous with brush or grass
  • Perennial overstory
  • Wetland vegetation community

Operational forecasters that understand the linkage between vegetation changes and evolution sequences can better anticipate FGM changes to regional rivers.
