Pattern (Plan View)

channel pattern section

Level II pattern morphologic analysis includes the following features:

  1. Sinuosity,
  2. Radius of Curvature,
  3. Bankfull Width,
  4. Meander Belt Width, and
  5. Meander Width Ratio

The following series of Stream types will extend for several slides, with each uppercase Stream type (A to G) followed by several channel material types (possibly 1 to 6). You may wish to skim or pass over large parts of this section if you have an understanding how the classification chart shown here translates pattern, profile, dimension (including channel material) measurements into a Stream type. Also note, a range in slope values affects evolution, and for a Stream type of uppercase A to G, sub-categories are denoted with lowercase letters, a, b, and c. Since publication of this chart, lowercase e has also been added to the classification of C Streams.
